"le grand peut-être" ( Rabelais) is not "le grand néant" ( even if it is preceded and succeeded by the word "maybe" on line 618).
It was employed by Victor Hugo in "Le Rhin", where he describes "Le Chateau des Palatins" and deals with feelings of impotence and ruin.
