I was initially puzzled by Carolyn's comments ( I was reminded of Shade's notations to himself within the poem, which are then echoed in Kinbote's publishing notes to the printer...), but from what she explained off-line I understood she meant JS's and CK's marginal commentaries addressed to a publisher or scribbled in rejected index-cards    .... Dear Jansy,

The "notes for further use" are Shade's* not Frost's and are in the poem, not in Kinbote's collection of rejects. My point is simply that, as this is late in the poem, Shade and Kinbote are starting to merge and this inability to distinguish what should be kept from public view is one of the many characteristics that they share.
