My two cents aside on Jekyll and Hyde, or rather Alasdair Gray's, from his A Short Survey of Classic Scottish Writers:

 

"The most wonderfully told is the tale of the middle-class bachelor who can only enjoy sex with prostitutes when changed by a debasing drug: a mainly true-to-life tale, though sexually insecure men usually debase their characters with alcohol."

I remember reading that "J&H" was inspired by the true case of the Edinburgh sociopath Deacon Brodie, a pillar of the Calvinist establishment by day and a cat burglar by night.

Coates & Braid, though. Are you sure there was such a brand? Perhaps
Coates and Clark marketed braid, a popular item for dressmakers in
