The March 18 issue of The Economist includes a review of Lesley
Chamberlain's The Philosohy Steamer: Lenin and the Exile of the
Intelligentsia (Atlantic Books). It is the story of Lenin's 1922
expulsion of 220 intellectuals from Soviet Russia and their fates
abroad. Among those mentioned in the review is VN's friend and first
reviewer, Iulii Aikhenvald--probably his first appearance in a "major"
Anglo-American news source. The book sounds like a highly valuable
study of VN's émigré milieu in the 1920s and -30s.
