Dear Jo Morgan,

It would be hard to find anything by Nabokov that does not contain a riddle, usually a multiple of them. An essay, "Who's Who in the Sublimelight"  in the most recent Nabokov Studies (vol. 8, 2004) suggests that one rather important riddle might be "why does the name of John Ray's  cousin and Humbert's lawyer, Clare[nce Choate Clark, Es]q." contain the name of Clare Q.?"

George Ferger, whose name suggests nothing to me, comes to some fascinating and intriguing, and possibly correct conclusions.
