the paragraph inadvertently dropped in all Russian versions of LOLITA)
for responding to the editor's plea. I have not read the excerpt as
yet but suspect it is not for the faint of heart. Sorokin is a recipient of the
prestigious "Russian Booker" Prize. Comments on the passage's relationship to
VN's writing are welcome. In my quick glance I noticed that the first sentence
parodies the first line of Tolstoy's ANNA Karenin(a) and, of course, that of
ADA.
