Traditionally, The New York Times and other papers
"of record" have a staff of obit writers who roam the world interviewing
obituary-worthy personalities before it is too late to get quotations, such as
Thomas Bolt mentions, from them . The obituary is written up and put in the
freezer until needed. As time passes and the interviewee refuses to give
occasion for thawing out the article, the writers may return to the scene
for more information and quotations and rewrite the thing. The interviewees
often know why they are being visited. I wonder what kind of feeling it
creates in the subject. For Nabokov, probably a soft smile and an inner "Of
course."
