Dezember 2002, 02:08, Neue Zürcher Zeitung Goethe, Nabokov und, ach, die SchweizThomas Hürlimann und Urs Widmer sammeln ihre EssaysOhne das bekannte Bild eidgenössischen Dioskurentums auffrischen zu wollen, lässt sich doch festhalten, dass Zeitgeist wie intellektuelle Disposition Urs Widmer und Thomas Hürlimann immer wieder aufs Neue in eine bemerkenswerte Nähe zueinander rücken. Nicht zuletzt haben sich sowohl der 1938 in Basel geborene Widmer als auch der zwölf Jahre jüngere Zuger Hürlimann mit zahlreichen Arbeiten zur Dramaturgie der Schweiz und über deren Schriftsteller fest in die Tradition der Schweizer Literatur eingebunden. Jüngste Zeugnisse dieses Selbstverständnisses finden sich in zwei Sammelbänden: «Himmelsöhi, hilf! Über die Schweiz und andere Nester» vereinigt mehrheitlich während der vergangenen drei Jahre in verschiedenen Zeitungen publizierte Essays und Kurzgeschichten sowie Reden von Thomas Hürlimann und ist in der zweiten Auflage um das Pamphlet «Die Schweiz hat die besten Verrückten!», Hürlimanns in der «Zeit» abgedruckten Beitrag zur Zürcher Theaterposse vom letzten Spätsommer, komplettiert worden. In formaler Hinsicht nicht minder heterogen nimmt sich Urs Widmers «Das Geld, die Arbeit, die Angst, das Glück» aus, worin weitschweifige und geistreiche Abhandlungen neben rund zwei Dutzend im «Magazin» des «Tages-Anzeigers» veröffentlichten Kolumnen stehen. Helvetisches MalaiseMit einem Schlenker zu Goethe (Hürlimann) beziehungsweise Tschechow, Joseph Conrad und Nabokov (Widmer) spannen die beiden Autoren in ihren Texten einen zeitlich und geographisch weit geöffneten Bogen bis zum helvetischen Malaise unserer Tage. In seinem im Oktober 2001 in der «Frankfurter Allgemeinen Zeitung» erschienenen Essay «Himmelsöhi, hilf!» deutet Thomas Hürlimann den Konkurs der Swissair als Symptom für das «Ende einer Ära». Seine Ansichten sind wohl nicht neu, allerdings selten zuvor derart prägnant formuliert worden. Etwa hätten die Schweizer nach dem Fall des Eisernen Vorhanges jäh «ein Problem mit der Zeit, genauer: mit zwei Zeiten. Denn im Schweizerhaus galt nach wie vor das Postkutschentempo, da ging der Bürger im sonntäglichen Spazierschritt. Die andere Welt jedoch, die grosse, worin wir mit unseren Geldern und Marken ja ebenfalls zu Hause waren, drehte sich immer schneller (. . .).» Die Stärken des Stilisten Hürlimann liegen freilich weniger im Politischen als in literarischen Sphären - mit «Ahmed, der Levantiner», einer im Doppelsinn des Wortes phantastischen Laudatio auf seinen Verleger Egon Ammann, dem Reisebericht «Spurensuche in Galizien» sowie der augenzwinkernden Reverenz an Goethe, der Kurzgeschichte «Augenmensch und Hörnlimann», setzt Thomas Hürlimann dem Büchlein einige Glanzlichter auf. Auch Urs Widmer kommt im Titeltext seiner neusten Blütenlese - der schriftlichen Version eines im Dezember 2000 im Zürcher Schauspielhaus gehaltenen Referats - mitunter auf die Doppelexistenz jener Demokratie-Verfechter zu sprechen, die mit beiden Beinen im Wirtschaftsleben stehen. «Wie halten wir das eigentlich aus, ohne irre zu werden, tagsüber Weisungen zu empfangen und Weisungen weiterzugeben, genau nach Funktionsdefinition, und am Abend ein reifer Bürger zu sein, gleichmässig am Wohle aller interessiert?» Die Ängste, «die das Jahr 1989 so überraschend in die Welt gesetzt hat», sind seiner Ansicht nach aber nicht allein auf die Schweiz begrenzt. Ebenso wenig gründen sie in einem aus dem Takt geratenen Zeitmass, sondern im Fehlen eines korrigierenden Gegenübers: Wenn «eine Gesellschaft von einem einzigen Denkmodell beherrscht wird, ist sie kaum mehr fähig, sich selber zu beobachten und zu kritisieren». Vermeintlicher PatriotismusAnders als Thomas Hürlimann im Essay «Himmelsöhi, hilf!» neigt Urs Widmer aber nicht zur Verklärung der Schweiz zu Gottfried Kellers Zeiten. Im Aufsatz «Über Gottfried Kellers ‹Fähnlein der sieben Aufrechten›» weist Widmer eben diese vermeintliche «patriotische Hurra-Geschichte» als eine Novelle aus, die erst dann «möglich und notwendig» geworden war, «als die wirkliche Schweiz sich von den Idealen von 1848 entfernt hatte». Überhaupt sind es die klugen literaturwissenschaftlichen Ausführungen, die das Buch so lesenswert machen. Da stört es kaum, dass die Abhandlungen in Teilen oder als Ganzes bereits seit längerem in Buchform vorgelegen haben. Wem Widmers 1991 unter dem Titel «Die sechste Puppe im Bauch der fünften Puppe im Bauch der vierten und andere Überlegungen zur Literatur» publizierte Grazer Poetikvorlesungen noch gegenwärtig sind, wird jedoch zumindest an jener Stelle stutzen, da Widmer seinen Schlüssel zum Verständnis von Nabokovs «Lolita» hervorzaubert: Hatte Widmer diese Interpretationsansätze nämlich einst als die eigenen ausgegeben, erfahren wir jetzt, dass sie offenbar von Widmers Gattin ersonnen wurden. In diesem Sinne darf man sich auf die von Widmer im Keller-Aufsatz angekündigte Studie «Die schrecklichen Mütter der Dichter» freuen - so diese denn um ein Kapitel über «Die gescheiten Ehefrauen der Exegeten» ergänzt sein wird. In formal respect less diverse does not look Urs Widmers « the money, the work, the fear, the luck » in what pleonastic and witty treatises stand near about two dozens in the "magazine" of the "day indicator" to published columns. Helvetian time sharpsWith a swerve to Goethe (Hürlimann) or Tschechow, Joseph Conrad and Nabokov (Widmer) both authors stretch a curve far opened geographically and temporally up to the Helvetian time sharp of our days in their(her) texts. In his(its) in October, 2001 in the " Frankfurt general newspaper » appeared essay « Himmelsöhi, help! » Thomas Hürlimann interprets the bankruptcy the Swissair as a symptom for the " end of an era ». His(its) views are not probably new, have been formulated but rarely previously such concisely. Possibly the Swiss would have a problem with the time, more exactly after the case of the iron curtain suddenly «: with two times. Since in the Swiss house the Continental stagecoach tempo was still considered(applied), there the citizen went in sonntäglichen Spazierschritt. Actually these are the wise literature-scientific executions which make the book so worth reading. There it hardly interferes that the treatises have been present in parts or as a whole already for a long time in book form. To whom Widmers are still current in 1991 under the title « the sixth doll in the belly of the fifth doll in the belly of the fourth and other considerations to the literature » published Grazer poetics lectures, however, will trim at least at this place, because Widmer his(its) key to the understanding of Nabokovs "Lolita» hervorzaubert: if Widmer had spent these interpretation attempts namely once as own, now we experience(find out) that they were invented evidently by Widmers wife. In this sense one may be glad on from Widmer in the cellar article announced study « the terrible mothers of the writers » - so this will be supplemented then around a chapter about the " clever wives of the exegetes ».
