EDITOR'S NOTE:
Some of you may recall earlier postings about VN's
synaesthesia on NABOKV-L. The discussion was in connection with research
being done for a Britsh television science program called "Horizon" which
resembles our PBS "Nova" programs. The program, which is about
synaesthesia in general, focusses on its relationship to creativity using
three "case histories" including that of Nabokov. Included are bits of an
interview with Nabokov's son, Dmitri, who is also a "synaesthete." The
program, "Orange Sherbert Kisses," is to be broadcast in the UK on Dec.
12 at 8pm. Since "Horizon" programs usually appear on American TV sooner
or later, many of you may eventually be able to see it. Until then
American Nabokovians will have to content themselves with a related
article by Michael Wright which is to appear in the (London) _Daily
Telegraph_ on Saturday, December 10th. May I voice the hope that one of
NABOKV-L's British subscribers (or anyone who sees the _Daily Telegraph_)
will provide us with a summary of the article.
While I have not seen the program, I can say with certainty that
Jan Klimkowski, the researcher for the show (and subscriber to NABOKV-L),
is well informed about Nabokov and awesomely so about synaesthesia. Those
interested in some preliminary information about VN and synaesthesia may
look in the first chapter of my _Worlds in Regression: Some Novels of VN_
where I suggest that synaesthesia played an important role in his creative
processes.
