Dear Mr. Vinh: I'll try to remember to send you later on reference to an
article that I wrote some years ago dealing with Nabokov's notes to the
Onegin (and Pale Fire), but now I'd like to call your attention to two
other writers who make creative use of footnotes in fiction. The first is
Flann O'Brien. The footnotes in his hilarious novel THE THIRD POLICEMAN
are essential to the overall design of the book. The other is Manuel Puig,
whose novel KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN is superior to the film and the musical
in part because the dramatic media cannot capture the effect of his foot-
